We're feeling tree-mendous in the valley
We've committed to planting more native trees to make our woodland work for wildlife. As part of a larger project we're removing non-native trees from the woods such as laurel and replacing them with native British trees. Devon Wildlife Trust kindly donated a large number of trees which we have ready to plant when a space becomes available.
Planting out
Not only do we have the Churchwood Valley team, we also have a willing band of volunteers from Churchwood Kindergarten on hand to grab a spade. We've enjoyed some wonderful times with the little ones from Forest School - teaching them how and why we're planting new trees.
Restoring balance
Over time we've seen non-native species such as laurel take hold on site and in the wider woodland. The march of laurel through the woods reduces biodiversity and impacts many habitats. It's important that we address the spread and restore balance to the woods. Taking out the laurel and replacing it with native British trees will increase the number of birds, insects and other species in the woodland. It will be a long and costly road but one we're excited to be travelling.
